Phyllis Irene (Tubbs) McAlister
November 27, 1933-June 7, 2003

Phyllis was born and raised in Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, the youngest child of Earl and Gladys (Erbe)Tubbs.
Phyllis had very long hair as a youngster, so long in fact that she could sit on it. She often said jokingly that she didn't like her long hair because her mother would have to comb it out everyday. It was truly remarkable though, and everyone thought it was absolutely beautiful. As a child Phyllis enjoyed roller-skating and going to the movies.
Shortly after her graduation from High School, Phyllis was married to Herb McAlister Aug. 21 1951 at Osage, Iowa. Phyllis and Herb were the parents of 5 children, Bill, Kim, Jack, Kris, and Kathy.
Phyllis was a Homemaker, and she very much enjoyed taking care of her home and family.
Many years ago Phyllis and Herb took in a young, Jr. League Hockey player named Mitch Corbin. Mitch played for the Austin Mavericks and lived with the McAlister family for a couple of years. Phyllis considered Mitch as one of her sons and looked forward to the Christmas cards and the Mother's Day cards that he sent her every year, for the last 20 years, without fail.
Phyllis was a wonderful cook and everyone looked forward to Mom making "Chicken and Dumplings". This was her specialty and a real treat! No one else could make dumplings like Mom!
Even though Mom loved to cook, she also enjoyed getting an occasional George's Pizza. George's Pizza nights were always special, not just for Mom but for the whole family.
Phyllis really enjoyed visits with her sister Joan (pronounced "Joann"). At least a couple times a year Joan would come up to Austin from Osage and stay with Mom for a few days. Sometimes they'd go shopping, but the real highlight of Joan's visits was when they'd go to Lansing Corners for supper. They really enjoyed this special time together! Sometimes Mom's friend Ann Dixon, or one of us girls would join them, but no matter what those 2 always had a great time. Also during Joan's visits, it was not uncommon to find Mom and Joan in the kitchen, cooking up old-fashioned concoctions that us kids were often afraid to try, things like parsnips, asparagus, rutabagas, and brussel sprouts. Mom would laugh and say, "Just try it, you might like it!" More times than not, we'd pass on it, and let Mom and Joan have at it, but we always had to rib them about the "funny" food they were cooking. Joan called Mom every night, and Mom looked so forward to those phone calls! Mom had a very special relationship with her sister and very much treasured the time they spent together.
Phyllis enjoyed having her family around, and every year she had a 4th of July picnic. Everyone would go to the parade and then meet at Mom's afterwards for the picnic. Later on, we would all sit on her front lawn and watch the fireworks together.
Phyllis loved her grandkids and babysat them whenever possible. She was a "hands-on" Grandma and could often be found tying shoes, washing a face, bandaging skinned knees, and Evan's personal favorite, playing ball (sometimes all day long!). One of funniest things that Phyllis liked to do was play Super Nintendo with the grandkids. While many Grandmas might have been sitting on their porches in their rocking chairs, Phyllis was busy trying to beat, Eric, Derek, Joey, Ryan, Jessi, or Aron to the next level of Nintendo. She would often call Derek on the phone and ask him for tips on how to pass the game!
Phyllis suffered some tragedies in her life, the sudden loss of her husband Herb in 1977 and the tragic loss of her daughter Kim, less than a year later. Although she never stopped missing them, she managed to pull through it and go on with her life. For Phyllis, family was everything.
Phyllis had many friends, some old and some new, and each one meant a lot to her. She had a great sense of humor and liked to joke around with people.
Phyllis enjoyed crocheting and made many blankets for the people she knew.
She was also an avid Twins fan, and followed them closely on T.V. She rarely missed a game!
She watched Jeopardy almost every day and had a passion for crossword puzzles. She loved Trivia of all kinds, and many of us were (unfortunately) accustomed to getting whipped by her in Trivial Pursuit.
Phyllis cherished her 3 cats, Baby, Buddy, and Benny, and spent countless hours with at least one of them curled up on her lap.
She was a good mother who loved each and every one of her children dearly.
Phyllis loved her daughter-in-laws Carol and Sandy like her own, and also had a special rapport with her son-in-laws. Son-in-law John endearingly called Phyllis, "The Old Hen" which Phyllis thought was very funny! Son-in-law Tommy was also near to Phyllis's heart and was always on hand to help with whatever she needed.
Phyllis was "Grandma" to, Rhonda, Matthew, Eric, Derek, Joey, Ryan, Jessi, Aron, Jenna, Emily, and Evan. She was also "Grandma" to her 2 step-grandchildren Rachel and Andy.
Phyllis was a special woman. She had a kind heart, a playful spirit, and was loved by many. She will be sorely missed.
