Restaurant Owner Succumbs to Self-Inflicted Injuries After Quarrel with Wife
John D. Eaves, 35, proprietor of the Dorothy Lunch Room on Sharp Avenue, died at 7 p.m. Saturday as the result of a gun-shot wound in the right temple, believed to have been inflicted by himself about two o’clock Saturday afternoon in the basement of the Edwards Hotel near the Q. subway where he resided. Following the shooting he was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital where efforts to save his life proved in vain. He never recovered consciousness according to the attendants.
His wife, Mrs. Dorothy Alexander Eaves, with whom he was said to have had a quarrel was reported residing at the Central Hotel. Saturday afternoon, according to Helen Eaves, 14, the oldest child of the family of five, her father, who she stated she believed had been drinking, had gone to the basement with a .32 caliber revolver. She heard a shot shortly afterward and found him with a bullet hole in the temple.
Coroner George S. Bower was to conduct an inquest at Kimber and West chapel at 4 p.m. today.
BORN HERE
Mr. Eaves was the son of L.L. Eaves of this city and was born here January 29, 1893. He was employed for several years by the Burlington as a brakeman and later by the Northwestern railroad as a brakeman and pilot in Chicago. He was a member of Company C, serving for the war period with that organization.
Surviving are the five children, Helen 14, Paul 12, Charles 7, Gladys 3, who has been with relatives in Princeton, and Donald 2, who has been living with relatives in Zearling.
Clarence, Clyde, Andrew, Louis, Charles and Robert Eaves are brothers, while Mrs. Alice Hunger is a sister of the deceased. The wife and father also live here.
The funeral will be at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Kimber and West chapel. Burial will be in Linwood.
