"Page Pioneers" who helped birth "America's Last Frontier" -- Page, Arizona, L.P. McCarty & Nellie Belle McCarty, along with their daughter, Kathryne Marie "Kaye" McCarty.

Nellie Belle and her husband, L.P., age 60, both passed away in Phoenix, AZ. He worked for Merritt-Chapman & Scott as a welder/pipe fitter on the construction of Glen Canyon Dam.

Nellie Belle Layer was born July 18, 1914, to Jim Layer (who was an orphan) & Ida Belle (Reager) Layer, in Harrisburg, Arkansas in a rural farmhouse on their big family farm. Nellie was a housewife who converted to the Catholic religion toward the end of her life. She died in Phoenix, Arizona on December 10, 1999 and was cremated. Her daughter retains her ashes.

Nellie's husband, Louis Patrick McCarty was born August 27, 1916 in Shreveport, Louisiana, the fifth child of Gordon McCarty, and the second child of Elizabeth Patrick McCarty, both with the Salvation Army. He died of cancer on February 10, 1977. He was a Third Degree Mason and worked on the Glen Canyon Dam as a welder/pipe fitter from 1961 to 1963. Louis (nicknamed "3-finger Mac") loved learning and passed his love of learning on to his daughter, Kaye. He is buried in Phoenix, Arizona and gets visits often from his family.

Louis (27) and Nellie (29) were married on March 29, 1944 and lived in St. Louis Missouri at the start of their marriage. Louis was self-educated and a whiz at geography, logic and debating. He also loved the game of checkers. He learned welding and pipe fitter skills by trying out at various job sites until he was proficient enough to be hired. Nellie and Louis (L.P), and their only child, Kaye (Kathryne Marie) McCarty, born November 11, 1945, traveled throughout the country moving from job to job. Kaye counted that she had attended 32 different schools by the time they arrived at Page, Arizona, where she was in Page High School Class of 1963, celebrating their 50th Reunion in Page in May 2013.

There were five McCarty brothers--half-brother Eugene (Bertie Margaret Day) (1908), Gordon "Vincent" (1914), Louis (1916), Kenneth, Marion (1923) & Sharon. Louis had two half-sisters, Gladys & Doris Inez (1905-1907), and one sister, Elizabeth, Jr. Louis' brother, Marion & Marianna McCarty, along with their children: Mark, Steven "Steve" (Lynette), Marilyn, Brenda & Candace "Candy" McCarty were also "Page Pioneers", except for Candy, who was a "change of life" baby after they moved from Page. Mark, Page High School Class of 1962, designed the PHS logo.
