Lavinia Meredith was born in Virginia in 1836, the daughter of John Wilson and Ann Seay (nee Wilson) Meredith. After her father died when she was 16 years old, Lavinia and her mother moved to St. Louis County, Missouri to be near her sisters. In 1861, Lavinia married Frederick Bates Jr, the youngest son of the second governor of Missouri. They had one son, Woodville Bates. Frederick Jr died in 1862 leaving behind his young wife and son. In 1868, Lavinia remarried to a wealthy land owner from the area, Samuel Conway, who was 34 years her senior and twice widowed with 12 children. Samuel and Lavinia had one son, Meredith. Samuel died in 1870. On January 29, 1873 Lavinia married Benjamin Kenney. Benjamin and Lavinia had two sons, Benjamin and William. Sometime between 1880 and 1900, Benjamin and Lavinia moved their family to Ventura, California. While in California they adopted a daughter, Grace. Lavinia died in December 1909 at the age of 75 and is buried in Loma Vista Memorial Park, in Fullerton, California. Benjamin died in 1932.
