Paul Christopher Ness was born Nov. 25, 1925 at the Ness ranch near Alkali, Meade County, SD, to Christopher A. and Christina (Larson) Ness. Christopher had come to the United States in April 1902 from Norway. Christina immigrated from Sweden in 1907. Paul was the 6th of 8 children. When Paul was 10 years old, the family moved to Rapid City where his father had a home building business with his sons.
Paul graduated from Rapid City High School in 1943, attended South Dakota School of Mines for one year, then from 1944-1946 he served in the U.S. Air Corps as a navigator. On Aug. 31, 1947 he married Leatta (Lee) Schekske, daughter of Gottfried and Martha (Suess) Schelske. They had 4 children - 2 sons and 2 daughters.
Paul graduated from S.D. School of Mines with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in June, 1951. He began work at Dakota Steel & Supply in Rapid City, eventually becoming Vice President in 1971, and later President from 1981 to 1986.
Paul and Lee were involved in the Black Hills Workshop for developmentally disabled children and adults, with Paul serving as president in 1964. After retirement, he was elected a Pennington County Commissioner, serving from 1987 to 1990. He was involved in many other civic and non-profit organizations, including Boy Scouts, Chamber of Commerce, Arrowhead Country Club, and South Canyon Lutheran Church.
Paul was a multi-talented man with many interests. He built two homes for his family, built scale models to use in court cases, gardened, and enjoyed fishing and travel. His family was a centerpiece of his life.
Paul died at the age of 82 on March 13, 2008 at the Rapid City Hospice House. Of great sorrow to him had been the deaths of his daughter, Sandee Lee Sittner, in 1980, and his son, Gregory Paul Ness, in 1985. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Harold and James. He was survived by his wife, one daughter, one son & daughter-in-law, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
