Herb was born on March 3, 1923 the son of Samuel James Roberts and Leona Qualls Roberts. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. Coming from a long heritage of professional photographers, Herb was involved in the family photography business in Lamesa before coming to Abilene in 1950 to establish Roberts Studio. With his wife Miriam at his side, the couple captured the faces and smiles of many in the Big Country over the years at this business that is still operated today by his oldest son, Ken. Herb also enjoyed doing the annual photos and being the sports and video photographer at Hardin-Simmons University for many years. He was a 32˚ Mason and a 50 year member of the First Baptist Church.
Herb enjoyed life, he loved people and he loved to have fun. As a pilot, it was not unusual for him to take family and friends on spur of the moment trips, especially to Mexico, one of his favorite places to go. He was an avid gardener who always kept a beautiful yard that was often the backdrop for many photography sessions.
Survivors include his wife and partner in life for nearly 67 years, Miriam Roberts of Abilene; his sons, Ken Roberts and wife Robin of Abilene, Gary Roberts and wife Mary of Petal, Mississippi, and Jay Roberts and wife Nancy of Abilene; five grandchildren, Kristen, Amy and husband Bobby, Tiffany, Emily and Sam; and one sister, Jody Roberts of Houston.
Pallbearers for the service will be Billy Bob Neff, Gerald Lewis, Charles Richardson, Bobby Riggs, Robert Briley and Harold Wicker; honorary pallbearers are, Sherwyn McNair, Kermitt Newton, Dudley Longacre, Emil Szymanski, Russell Taylor and Ray Cannefax.
Memorial donations are suggested to First Baptist Church or Hardin-Simmons University.
