Virginia Byars Caldwell, 98, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in NHC Health Care of Bristol, VA.


She was born in Bristol Virginia, a daughter of the late Joseph Cloyd Byars and Jane Bailey Byars, and was educated in the public schools of Bristol and Sullins College. She lived in Norfolk and Arlington County, VA, California and Hawaii and again in Arlington County before returning to Bristol in 1931.


She was the widow of U.S. Navy Lt. Kenneth Lee Coontz and Judge Joseph Anderson Caldwell. She and Judge Caldwell began the restoration of the Old Deery Inn in Blountville in 1940 and she lived there until 1990, when she entered NHC Health Care. She was a member of Blountville Presbyterian Church, the National Society for Historic Preservation, the Washington County (Virginia) Historical Society and Fort Chiswell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.


Surviving are a son, Capt. Robert Joseph Coontz, U.S. Navy (retired) of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Bailey Preston Byars of Falls Church, VA; three stepsons, Capt. John Henderson Caldwell III, U.S. Navy (retired) of Aeia, Hawaii, Craig Hawley Caldwell of Bristol TN and The Rev. Clifford Douglass Caldwell of Staunton, VA; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; 14 step-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; and several step-great-great-grandchildren.


Graveside services and burial will be conducted Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Caldwell Memorial in Glenwood Cemetery.
