Hi! I'm a Carpenter researcher, and I found the post you have for "Miles" Carpenter. He's actually Niles Carpenter. I have pasted his bio in below.

John Laird
Santa Cruz, CA
------------------------
Niles Carpenter – A son of Jeremiah Jr., not a son of Jeremiah Sr. as stated in the Charles L. Carpenter genealogy. He appears to be the oldest of three known sons of Jeremiah, Jr. Census entries place his birth in May 1825 and he was shown to have died on February 17, 1918. His first wife Lydia Stewart appears to have died after 1875, the last time she was shown with Niles in a census. He is with second wife Calista Bingham by the 1880 census, and she survived him, dying in 1925. Niles was likely born in Erie County, was shown in Erie County records, and moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota between 1855 and 1857, where he lived out his life. He and Lydia had four children. At least three survived to adulthood.

The 1937 Marilla history states that "in 1847 Niles Carpenter built the first store, which became a part of the Albert Adams house. . . Harrison T. Foster succeeded Niles Carpenter, the first merchant, for a short time and then in company with Charles Walker, built a second store in 1851 and closed it in 1854. . . . Niles Carpenter store was the former G. C. Monchow residence, until the fall of 1853."

Niles is shown in an 1849 deed in Deed Book 84, p. 180. Saw Mill Release. Anson Storm v. Joseph Carpenter. Land situated in the Buffalo Creek Reservation party of Lot 30 in Township Ten, and Fifth Range. Bounded by a highway running east from the bridge below the saw mill, one half of a rod from the east bank of the creek. Released from a certain mortgage on this date. September 19, unclear year.

Erie County Deed Book 94, pp. 216. Charlotte Brinkeroff and Louisa Troup (?) of the City County and State of New York, the only surviving heirs at law ?? of Robert Troup of said City to Niles Carpenter of the Town of Alden, Erie County. April 23, 1849. One thousand four hundred twenty-eight dollars. Land in Alden Township Ten of Range Five (?) Lot Fifteen on a map that was a part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation. Signed by Charlotte Brinkeroff and Louisa Troup. M. V. Wheeler (?), Justice of the Peace. This whole deed was very difficult to read.

Erie County Deed Book 114, p. 486. Niles Carpenter and Lydia M., his wife, of Alden, Erie County, to Jeremiah Carpenter of the same place. March 13, 1850. One thousand four hundred and twenty eight dollars. Land in the town of Alden, in township ten in the fifth range of township, known as lot number fifteen on a map of a part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation surveyed by James Sperry. Contained eighty nine acres. Signed Niles Carpenter and Lydia M. Carpenter. Witnessed by Asa Mann. Recorded June 6, 1850.

Niles Carpenter is shown in the 1850 census in Alden Township, Erie County, New York, in an entry taken on July 15, 1850, next door to William and his father Jeremiah, and on the same page as Jeremiah (Joseph's son), Perry Ford (son-in-law to Joseph), and George W. Carpenter. Niles is shown as 25, a merchant with property valued at $700; with Lydia, 19, Orren F., 2, and Warren, 18, a farmer, all shown as born in New York.

The 1937 history reprints an announcement of "Grand Dedication, New-Years Festival. At the Spring Hotel, South Alden, on Tuesday, December 27, 1853, at 5 o'clk, P.M. The pleasure of your Company if respectfully solicited. Tickets Two Dollars. N. Carpenter Pro'r. Music by Bacayins(?) Band." This original of this invitation card was listed as being in the possession of Mrs. Byronia Carpenter Schwartz.

The history reads: "The Spring Hotel followed being built by Niles Carpenter in 1852. It was built on porous ground into which a pole could easily be pushed several feet, and near it is a fine spring which is still in use, from which the hotel took its name. John Wilder, La Foyette Lamb carried it on the first year, Niles Carpenter took it over in 1853 and operated it until 1857, followed by Whitford Harrington, V. Hathorn, Hurd and Allen Mott."

Erie County Deed Book 140, p. 569. John A. Wilder and Lucy Jane his wife of Alden Township, Erie County to Niles Carpenter of the same place. Five hundred dollars. July 17, 1852. Land in the Town of Alden having been part of Buffalo Creek Reservation, Part of Lot fifteen. Containing seventy hundredths of an acre of land (sic – that's what it says, must have left out the primary acreage number). Signed John A. Wilder and Lucy J. Wilder. July 167, 1852 deed presented. Recorded August 13, 1853.

Erie County Deed Book 140, p. 572. July 25, 1853. John C. Carpenter and Mary his wife and Lewis Carpenter and Loraine his wife of the Town of Alden, County of Erie to Niles Carpenter of the Town of Alden and County of Erie. Fifty dollars. Land in Alden being a part of Lot number Twelve of the town of the Buffalo Creek Reservation. States that it is ninety eight hundredths of an acre. Signed Lewis Carpenter, Loraine R. Carpenter, John C. Carpenter, Mary Carpenter. Loraine and Mary were examined separate. August 3, 1853. Witnessed and signed by Asa Munn, Justice of the Peace. Recorded August 13, 1853.

Erie County Deed Book 142, p. 293. Niles Carpenter and Lydia M. his wife of the Town of Alden County of Erie State of New York to Lyman Barnham Jr. of the town, county, and state aforesaid. Twenty-five dollars. October 1, 1853. Land situated in the Town of Alden, County of Erie, being part of Lots Twelve and Fifteen in the Buffalo Creek Reservation. The boundaries are described and mentioned is the line of certain property deeded to Niles Carpenter by Jeremiah Carpenter. Signed by Niles Carpenter and Lydia M. Carpenter. There was no listed witness. Lydia was examined privately by Stafford Pike, Justice of the Peace. Recorded on December 7, 1853.

The Fillmore County history noted that Niles Carpenter arrived in Holt Township in 1854, lived there four years, and moved on to Preston. He later became County Auditor. The year 1854 is probably not the right year that Niles arrived, as he is shown below in New York in 1855. The 1937 Marilla history states the first town meeting was held in the home of Niles Carpenter on March 7, 1854.

Niles is shown in the 1855 New York state census in Marilla in Erie County, a page from Jeremiah, William, and Warren Carpenter. Niles is shown as born in Erie County, 30, married, a merchant, lived in the Marilla area for thirty years. With him in the entry is Lydia M., wife, 24, born in Oneida County, but lived in the Marilla area for twenty years; Orrin F., 7, and Orra S., 4. Each of the children lived their entire life locally. There are two servants in the entry, Kelly Bundy, 20, and Frances Dairy, 19, (also with her occupation as clerk). There is a third non-family member in the entry – James Blanchard, 29, married, born in Erie County, living in the township for fourteen years.

Erie County Deed Book 168, p. 127. Jeremiah Carpenter of the Town of Marilla, County of Erie, State of New York to Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, eight are listed – including John C. Carpenter and Niles Carpenter. Two hundred dollars. May 21, 1855. Land in Marilla part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation, part of Lot Fifteen, formerly of the Town of Alden. No acreage listed. Signed, Jeremiah Carpenter. Witness, R. R. Barron. R. R. Barron, Justice of the Peace certifies. Recorded, December 2, 1856.

Erie County Deed Book 170, p. 287. February 15, 1856. Jeremiah Carpenter of the Town of Marilla, Erie County, and Niles Carpenter, of Marilla. Six Dollars. Land in the Town of Marilia being a part of Lot Number Fifteen on the Buffalo Creek reservation of the late purchase formerly of the Town of Alden. Bounded by Lot Seventy. No acreage listed. Signed by Jeremiah Carpenter. February 15, 1856. Recorded December 1, 1856.

Erie County Deed Book 170, p. 294. May 14, 1856. Niles Carpenter and Lydia M. Carpenter, his wife, of the Town of Marilla, Erie County, to Jeremiah Carpenter, Town of Marilla. One thousand and ? hundred dollars. Land in Marilla in Lot Number Fifteen in the Buffalo Creek Reservation formerly of the Town of Alden. Mentioned in the body of the deed are lands deed to Cobb E. Abbott and Seth Taber in 1853 now owned and occupied by Leonard Brook and Harrison Foster. Acreage apparently not listed. Signed by Niles Carpenter and Lydia M. Carpenter. February 15, 1856. Recorded December 1, 1856. This deed is significant in two ways. First, it shows Niles selling out in Erie County, and second it is the first known deed with his wife Lydia.

Erie County Deed Book 179, pp. 339-40. Jeremiah Carpenter of the Town of Marilla, County of Erie, State of New York to Jonathan B. Boss (Ross?) of the Town of Bennington, County of Wyoming, State of New York. Five hundred dollars. June 4, 1856. Land in Town of Marilla County of Erie State of New York Lot Twelve, part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation of the Ogden Company, formerly of the Town of Alden. John C. Carpenter and wife, Lewis Carpenter and wife, and Niles Carpenter listed as adjoining land owners. No acreage listed. Signed, Jeremiah Carpenter. Seth P. Tabor, Justice of the Peace certifies. Recorded, April 29, 1857.

Sometime between 1855 and 1857, Niles Carpenter and his family moved to Minnesota. The History of Fillmore County states: "Niles Carpenter was born near Buffalo, New York in 1825. In 1856 he came to Highland Prairie, Holt Township, this county. When he became county auditor he moved to Preston, and later located in Rushford. He was interested in the banking business for many years. His part in the official life of the county is told elsewhere [in this volume]."

One Erie County deed in February 1857 places Lydia Carpenter in Fillmore County: Erie County Deed Book 196, p. 62. Lydia M. Carpenter of County of Fillmore, Territory of Minnesota to William Selee (?) of the same place (sic). One hundred dollars. February 28, 1857. Land in Town of Marilla County of Erie State of New York Lot One hundred, part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation of the Ogden Company purchase, formerly of the Town of Alden now occupied by Susan Stewart. No apparent acreage listed. Witnessed by Niles Carpenter and John Russell. Signed by Lydia M. Carpenter. E. J. Onstine, Justice of the Peace certifies. Recorded, February 5, 1859.

In a Minnesota state census for 1857, taken on October 15, 1857 for Township 103, Range 9 of Fillmore County, is shown Niles Carpenter, farmer, 32, living with William Seely, 26, a farmer – both born in New York. Also in the entry was Niles' family, Lydia M. Carpenter, 26; Orrin Carpenter, 9; and Orra Carpenter, 6, all born in New York.

There is a Bureau of Land Management record for Niles Carpenter for 120 acres in Fillmore County in a transaction dated June 1, 1859 – the same day there is a transaction from the same office for his father, Jeremiah Carpenter – and the same day that brother Warren Carpenter secured land through the Chatfield land office. Niles Carpenter and Susan Stewart are listed at the patentees, and Samuel Stewart is listed as the warrantee. This is shown as being done from the Brownsville land office, and was not cancelled.

Niles and his family are shown in the 1860 census in post office Highlands, Douglas Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, in an entry taken on August 3, 1860. Shown are Niles Carpenter, 35, a farmer born in New York with property valued at $1200/$250; with Lydia Ann, 29; Orrin F., 12; Ora L., 9; Oscar H., 2; and Cora, 1. Lydia and the oldest two children were born in New York and the youngest two children were shown as born in Minnesota.

The 1912 Fillmore County history indicates that there was a bounty and call for service members in 1863 during the Civil War. Niles Carpenter was listed as County Auditor in the section on this subject.

In the 1865 Minnesota state census, Niles Carpenter is shown in Preston, Fillmore County. The only reference in the census other than name this year, is gender. All the remaining members of Niles' family were just listed by initial and gender: L. M., female; O. F., male; O. S., female; and O. C., female.

In 1984 Fillmore County History, there is an article titled "Architectural Heritage in Rushford". It makes a reference in this section to "the present home of Dr. and Mrs. Ole Landsverk, the former residence of Miles (sic) Carpenter, built in 1867". This was said to be an example of the Gothic Revival in Minnesota.

In 1868, the City of Rushford incorporated and set forth city officers. Niles Carpenter was one of two Justices of the Peace.

Niles Carpenter is shown in the 1870 census in Fillmore County, P. O. Rushford, Minnesota, 45, a banker, with property, $4,000/$1,000 born in New York, with L.M., 39, keeping house, O. F., 22, banker, Orra, 19, at home, all born in New York, and Cora, 11, born in Minnesota. In the same listing are Kate E. Daniels, 22, a school teacher, born in Wisconsin and May Oppergard, 19, domestic service, born in Norway.

[A Nial (Nile) Carpenter is shown in Hunters Creek Cemetery in Erie County (probably in the Wales area) as having died March 28, 1875, at age 52 years, 3 months, 19 days. This does not appear to be this Niles, as he went to Minnesota.]

The Political Graveyard website shows that Niles Carpenter represented Fillmore County in the Minnesota State House of Representatives second district in 1873.

To prove that it is a different Niles in 1875, Niles is shown in the Minnesota state census that year in Rushford, Fillmore County, Minnesota, and the census lists who was a resident of record on May 1, 1875. In his entry are Niles Carpenter, 49, born in New York with both his parents born in New York; Lydia Carpenter, 48, also born in New York with both her parents born in New York; Cora Carpenter, 15, born in Minnesota with both her parents born in New York; George J. Walker, 26, born in Ohio with his father born in New York and his mother in Ohio; Ora Walker, 23, born in New York with both her parents born in New York; and Eliza Anderson, 24, born in Norway with both her parents born in Norway. George was likely Niles son-in-law; and Eliza was likely a servant or boarder.

Niles is shown in a report of the Minnesota Department of Game and Fish. It appears that 8,000 brook trout were delivered to Niles Carpenter in Rushford, for delivery to streams of Houston County, on June 1, 1880. A second, later report shows eight thousand brook trout were delivered to Niles Carpenter of Rushton for distribution in streams in Fillmore, Winona, and Houston counties in May, 1883, and six thousand more were delivered a few days later.

Lydia, Niles' wife, is shown in the 1875 census for the final time, and he is shown with his second wife Calista in the 1880 census.

There is a listing for Lydia in the Aurora New York records transcribed from a Family History Library film by Mary Vukman, although some things in this are unclear: S. B. 1870-1902 pg. 72 [a source?] Mrs. Miles [sic – it states Miles, but it is really Niles each time is states that] Carpenter – Lydia M. Stewart died from fatal poisoning from wrong medicine sent by doctor, at Rushford MN wife of Hon. "Miles" Carpenter who settled in Wales which was afterwards set off as the town of Marilla. He was the second elected supervisor of Marilla, also started the first hotel and built the first store in Marilla. Lydia was the dau. of Samuel Stewart, on of the pioneers of the town of Wales, where her brothers and sister still reside. In 1857, they migrated with their family to MN. They settled at Rushford MN, and he was a prosperous banker, and several times held public office.

Niles is shown in the 1880 census in Rushford, Fillmore County, Minnesota. The listing shows: Niles Carpenter, 55, a banker born in New York with both his parents born in New York. He is with C. B. Carpenter, his wife, 45, keeping house, born in New York with her father born in New Hampshire and her mother in Vermont; Cora O. Carpenter, daughter, 20, at home, born in Minnesota with her parents born in New York; and Caroline Johnson, a servant, 23, born in Norway with both her parents born in Norway.

The "History of Fillmore County Minnesota", compiled by Franklin Curtiss-Wedge and published by H. C. Cooper Jr. and Co of Chicago in 1912 – lists Niles Carpenter as having been a County Commissioner in 1884, 1885, and 1886. An act of the legislature in 1885 created five districts of members with staggered terms commencing at the end of 1886. From 1889 to 1893, Niles Carpenter served in District One.

Niles is shown in the city of Rushford in the 1885 state census, with the precise date not listed. Niles Carpenter is shown as 60, born in New York; with C. B. Carpenter, 53, born in New York; and Cora Carpenter, 25, born in Minnesota.

Niles and his family are shown in Rushford, Fillmore County, Minnesota in the 1895 state census, taken on June 8, 1895. Niles Carpenter, 70, a banker born in New York, a resident of the state for thirty-nine years and a resident of the enumeration district for twenty-eight years, and his parents were not of foreign birth. With him was C. B. Carpenter, 63, born in New York, with neither of her parents being of foreign birth.

In the Fillmore County 1896 plat book, there is a listing for Niles Carpenter, banker, Rushford, shown as arriving in the County in 1856.

Niles is shown in the 1900 census in the City of Rushford, Fillmore County, Minnesota, taken June 8, 1900. Niles is shown as 75, a banker born in May 1825, born in New York with both his parents born in New York. He is shown with his wife, Calista B., 68, born in July 1831, in New York with her father born in Massachusetts and her mother in Vermont. They are shown to have been married for twenty years, and she is shown to have had zero children with zero of them living. With them is Josephine Bentley, sister-in-law to Niles, 58, June 1841, with one child, one living. A servant, Mathilda Larson, 20, was also shown with them.

The 1912 Fillmore County history indicates that an Old Settlers Club was formed in 1903, with Niles Carpenter as one of the members.

Niles is shown in Rushford in the 1905 Minnesota state census, taken on June 2, 1905. Shown is Niles Carpenter, 80, banker, born in New York with both his parents born in New York; Calista B. Carpenter, 74, born in New York with her father born in New Hampshire and her mother in New York. On the next line is Niles' sister-in-law Josephine T. Bentley, 63, born in New York with her father born in Massachusetts and her mother in Vermont.

Niles is in Rushford, Fillmore County, Minnesota at 201 Rushford Avenue, in the 1910 census, taken April 26, 1910. He is a bank president, 84, married thirty years, born in New York with both his parents born in New York. With him is Calista B., his wife, 78, also married for thirty years, showing that she had borne no children, and born in New York with both her parents born in Vermont. With them is Josephine Bentley, shown as sister-in-law, with her own income, 68, one child with one living, born in New York with her father born in Massachusetts and her mother in Vermont. Also shown was Gudwin C. Hagen (female), a personal servant for a private family (that was the listing, it was likely for the Carpenters), listed as a servant in relationship, 21, shown as having immigrated in 1907, and born in Norway with both her parents born in Norway.

There is a death record for Niles Carpenter in Fillmore County death records, showing that he died on February 17, 1918. I have gone through the will books for Fillmore County, and in March, 2009, and wrote the county clerk there. The response stated that there was no probate record for Niles in Fillmore County. This does not seem right, as he appeared to have real property, and likely had children alive. When his wife died seven years later, she left a will.

In the 1920 census of Rushford City, Fillmore County, Minnesota, taken on January 13, 1920, Calista B. Carpenter is shown at 228 Park Avenue, a widow, 87, born in New York with both her parents born in Vermont. With her is another widow, Josephine Bentley, 77, no relationship to Calista listed, born in New York, with her father born in Massachusetts and her mother in Vermont.

There is a death record in Fillmore County, Minnesota for Celestia (sic) Bingham Carpenter, who died June 11, 1925. Calista's will, originally prepared in 1914, was probated in September 1925 and names her as Calista Bingham Carpenter. It leaves her estate to her sister Mrs. Josephine Bentley. Her middle name is unclear in the handwriting, and appears that it might be Thwing or Twining.
