Merrimon Featherstone was the son of Jesse Featherstone & Catherine Thorn. He was born in Corse, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located west of Italy, southeast of the French mainland

Tradition has it that Merrimon belonged to the Bonaparte family, and it was strong enough for him eventually to have a grandson named Napoleon Bonaparte Featherstone. His father is alleged to have been a visiting Englishman, so ethnically he was half English, half Italian/Corsican.

He was a powerfully built young man and a wrestler by profession, wandering over the continent wherever he could schedule a wrestling bout. His travels eventually took him to England where he became champion of the British Isles, and gave a command performance for the King. From England he began to look westward for more fields to conquer, and he set sail for Virginia where his ring performances continued to be popular prior to the Revolution.

In 1776 he came to Lincoln County, NC, where Col. Ambrose Mills of the British Army admired his strength and wrestling skills. The Colonel recruited him for the Tory forces whose major job in this outpost was to protect the settlers from the Indians. However, the Revolution broke out, and they found themselves in a serious situation. With them was Col.... Mills' son, Major Wm Mills. All three served under Col. Ferguson at the battle of Kings' Mountain, where Col. Ferguson was killed and Col' Ambrose Mills captured and hanged. A full description of the battle is given by Lyman Draper in Kings' Mountain and its Heroes.

In Rutherford, North Carolina, on November 5, 1799 he married Amelia "Milly" Mills, (daughter of Col. Ambrose Mills and Anna Brown).
Merrimon and Milly had seven children:

*Ambrose Mills Featherstone (1800–1846)
*William T. Featherstone (1805–1880)
*Seaborn Trader Featherstone (1809–1893)
*Jesse Featherstone (1810–1848)
*Ann Brown Featherstone (1813–1850)
*Mariah Catherine Featherstone (1816-1875)
