She spent the next four years at various hospitals, including Number 16 Stationary Hospital at Le Tréport, Number 32 Stationary Hospital at Wimereux (north of Boulogne), and finally, Number 46 Stationary Hospital at Etaples. France.

Her last assignment was at Etaples. Though considered far enough back from the front-line to be safe from attack, it was subject to German Gotha bomber raids especially during night operations. On 19 May 1918, she was slightly wounded during a bomber raid. She continued her care for the patients, nonetheless. Subsequently, she was awarded the Military Medal for her bravery in this action in July 1918.

During her time in France, she kept a running diary of her wartime experiences. This was edited and published in 2013, under the title, Dorothea's War: A First World War Nurse Tells Her Story.

She died after contracting peritonitis. A surgery was performed at 24 General Hospital at Etaples, but she did not survive. She was interred in the Etaples Military Cemetery alongside others who fell in that War.
