CRAIN, John Thomas Age 90. Died in Nashville on March 19, 2013 of natural causes. Born in Nashville, TN on November 1, 1922. Mr. Crain was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Helen Strowd Crain; his father, John Egbert Crain; his mother, Marie Smith Crain; his sister, Rose Marie White; his brother, Samuel L. Crain; his son, John Thomas "Tommy" Crain; his granddaughter, Ella Helen Crain. He is survived by his children, Sherry (James) Arledge, Billy (Sandy) Crain; his daughter-in-law, Melissa Crain; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Crain attended Duncan School in Nashville and Georgia School of Technology in Atlanta, GA where he studied Architectural Design and Engineering and was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. Upon leaving college, he entered into the Air Force where he was a Lieutenant and an Intelligence Officer serving in the Pacific during World War II. He was awarded four bronze stars for his service to his country. Mr. Crain went to work for his father at J.E. Crain Contractor in 1950. When he retired in 1986, he had taken J.E. Crain & Son from a home building business to one of the city's most well-known commercial construction companies. J.E. Crain & Son built the very first Quonset hut in Nashville and the first Shoney's restaurant in Nashville. Mr. Crain was a jazz aficionado and collector of jazz music and his love for music was no more evident than both of his sons becoming talented, internationally known musicians. Mr. Crain and his wife, Helen, loved to travel and were able to travel around the world after he retired. He loved his orange Mercedes convertible, his men's bridge club and every kind of gadget, especially cameras. He was a longtime member of St. George's Episcopal Church, the City Club of Nashville and Belle Meade Country Club where he enjoyed many years on the golf course. The family would like to thank with sincere gratitude his longtime caregivers, George Walker and Mary Groves. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville, TN; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ; or the charity of your choice . The service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013 at St. George's Episcopal Church, 4715 Harding Road, Nashville, TN 37205. A private burial for the family will follow.
