In all public records (census, directories, church, newspaper accounts, etc.) their surname is consistently given as GARL. Only in a few references including burial, are Frederick & Rebecca referred to as GAUL.
Several accounts concerning the unusual fate of the majority of the 18 Garl children had been published. Although it is suspected that their infant offspring were also interred at Alsace, cemetery records do not support this theory.
Suspected burials at Alsace:
Emma Garl (18 Apr 1878-18 Jul 1878)
Lillie Garl (06 Apr 1879-25 Apr 1879)
Ida Garl (22 Mar 1883-22 Jul 1883)
Clara Garl (06 Dec 1886-19 Dec 1886)
William Carl (05 Apr 1888-04 Aug 1888)
