On 7 Mar 1864 he ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts due to disability, having been gained from desertion.
On 25 Dec 1864 he married Lucy L. Wallace, 20, daughter of Church and Sophronia Wallace, at Worcester, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.
Cornelius W. Briggs made application for a veteran's pension on 29 Sep 1865, and received certificate number 68113.
The U. S. Consular registration forms in Montreal, Canada, show that Cornelius had moved to that city by February 1890. He had apparantly separated from his wife. They had not divorced as she later received a widow's pension.
On 4 Jul 1907 he was included on the Civil War memorial at Webster, Massachusetts.
