Barbara Keith McAlister passed on to that house not made with hands Friday, April 29, 2005, in Copley Hospital in Morrisville. Born Barbara Mae Keith Sept. 25, 1926, Pleasant Valley area of Cambridge, to Hollis Unite Keith and Myrtle Lawrence Keith, raised in Mud City in Morristown, on the family farm. 1944 graduate of Peoples Academy, 1947 graduate of the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington. She borrowed $100 from her brother Earle and set off on a train to California to "see the world." It was there at a hospital at which she was working she met her future husband, George W. McAlister, originally from Arkansas, who was her patient. They were married Jan. 1, 1950, in Los Angeles. Late summer of 1955,returned to Vermont with her husband and two young sons where she introduced her southern husband to the northern climate of which he developed a fondness. Their marriage continued until his death on Dec. 6, 1983, in Brattleboro. Employed at the Brattleboro Retreat. Was Director of Nurses at Vernon Green Nursing Home in Vernon many years. After the death of her husband returned to Lamoille County, residing in Stowe and then Morrisville at Copley Terrace. Exceptionally active in the Lamoille County Senior Center, President for 12 years. During her tenure there some were destined to rue the day they did not act as fast as "SHE" thought they should on some matter concerning the Senior Center or people in need; and no doubt bear the emotional scars of those encounters to this day. For years regularly toured area nursing homes playing her fiddle to entertain residents, was the recipient of numerous awards in honor of her labors as a volunteer. An award-winning old time fiddler! (Cremated, ashes placed in fiddle case in Keith plot)
