The 1870 census shows her father, born in Ireland, as having real estate of $3,000 and $300 in savings. He was a furniture maker. He was 45 years old at that time. Emma was in school at age 10 in Vinton, Benton, Iowa. There is a record of furniture purchased by the school for the blind from him in Vinton, Benton, Iowa.

Edward Carrick served in the Spanish American War.

Emma's mother Martha Laughead-Carrick was the first wife of James Carrick. Emma's parents were married December 23, 1848. Martha, her mother, was born in Logan County, Ohio.
Their children were Charles, William, Martha, James Harvey (J.H.), Emma A., Frank, Edward, Mattie (who married Edwin Lewis) and Peter.

Emma A. Carrick, married Harold "Harry" Story and they moved to Chicago. She and her children died young, and Harry remarried to Lucy Belle Hart Story.

Emma is buried in Rosehill Cemetery alongside Harry Story and her children.
