Found in The State 14 February 1970: Mrs. Nell deTreville Bethea, widow of former S. C. Lt. Gov. Andrew J. Bethea who served from 1915-1919, died Thursday in her home at 1615 College St. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Hugh W. McClure III. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. She was born in Walterboro, a daughter of the late James and Julia deTreville and had lived most of her life in Columbia. She was active for many years in civic affairs of Columbia and was the recipient of numerous civic honors. She was a former president of the Columbia chapter of the American Legion Auxilary and was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and several other organizations. She was the first woman in South Carolina to serve as secretary to the president of the S. C. Senate and was the first woman notary public in South Carolina. Surviving are four brothers, James deTreville of Columbia, Ellis deTreville Sr. of Beaufort, Morgan deTreville of McPhersonville, Ga., and Alfred deTreville of Glennville, Ga.; and two sisters, Misses Catherine and Marie deTreville of Walterboro. She was a graduate of Columbia College and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Pallbearers will be Ellis deTreville Jr., Julian deTreville, Paul C. deTreville, Harold Derrick, James P. deTreville and Jean D. Derrick.
