Christopher C. Greenman
Columbus Greenman served in Co. C, 3rd Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted for three years at the age of twenty-six on July 10, 1864, at Lawton, Michigan. He was mustered in on July 19, 1864, and discharged at Madison, Indiana, on May 26, 1865.
The 3rd Michigan Cavalry was organized at Grand Rapids, Michigan, in September 1861. It was mustered in on October 4, 1861. The regiment returned to Michigan on March 10, 1866, where the soldiers were paid and the regiment disbanded.
Christopher Columbus Greenman was born on June 24, 1838, in New York, the son of Hallet Greenman. He married Phebe, who was born about 1847 in Michigan. In 1870, the Greenman family lived in Watervielt, Berrien County, Michigan, where Christopher was a farmer. He valued his real estate at $500 in 1870.
In 1880, the Greenman family lived in Geneva, Van Buren County, Michigan, where Christopher was a carpenter.
The Greenman family moved to Kalkaska County, Michigan, before 1890 and by 1900 Christopher Greenman was widowed and lived in Coldsprings Township, Kalkaska County.

Civil War veteran Christopher Columbus Greenman died at the age of seventy on January 25, 1908, in Coldsprings Township. His funeral was held at the Coldsprings Town Hall under the auspices of the Odd Fellows. He is the only known Civil War veteran to be buried in the Coldsprings Township Cemetery in Kalkaska County, Michigan. He was survived by one daughter and three sons. A Civil War military headstone and a G.A.R. flag holder mark Mr. Greenman's grave.
