"PROMINENT CITIZEN IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Merrill Tomlinson, 29, Dies in Indianapolis Hospital Last Thursday Night
Funeral services for Merrill Tomlinson, 29 years old, were held at the Christian church in Nashville Sunday afternoon, August 23 at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in the Nashville cemetery. He died at 9 p.m. Thursday, August 20 in the Robert W. Long hospital in Indianapolis. Death was caused by an enlarged heart disease, from which he had suffered for ten years, although he was bedfast only about two months.
The Dr. J. E. deGaferelly, pastor of the Christian church, officiated at the funeral service. Pallbearers were: Clarence Robertson, Joseph Pryor, Clarence Aynes, Paul Rogers, Fred Taylor and George Howard. Flower-bearers were Meredith Rogers and Dorothy Schrougham.
Music was provided by Mrs. Leslie Walker and Mrs. Mont Weddle, singers, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Taylor, pianist.
The funeral was in charge of Barks and Albright. The services were attended by a congregation that packed the church to pay their last respects to Merrill's memory, who was familiarly known as "Matt."
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Juanita Tomlinson, four [sic] daughters: Janet, Julia, Carol, Sue and Jane; his father, Lewis Tomlinson; four brothers, Paul Tomlinson of Columbus, Indiana; John Tomlinson of Rozelle, N. J.; Lewis and Howard Tomlinson; and two sisters, Maud Tomlinson of Nashville, and Mrs. Mary Yoder, of Helmsburg.
A part of the obituary follows:
"Merrill knew full well, courageously well, that at best all Life is a limited thing for us all.
"Jesus came to teach us that Life is measured, not by the calendar, but by character. Merrill did not take his responsibilities lightly, as a father and as a husband and as a citizen. He knew the value of life, but he also knew, as we do, that some day must come that call for each of us to go.
“Jesus taught us---and He taught Merrill, too---that Hope can save life: Love can beautify life: Service can glorify life: and faith in God and Christ can make this life eternal."
