Charles was the younger of two sons. On October 10, 1886, he was baptized by Rev. George W. Millerat at the Central United Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He married Alice Ackley in 1903, and the couple raised seven children: Thelma, Ruth, Charles Jr., Ola, Vera, Grant, and Willard. He was employed by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, initially as a brakeman, then later as a switchman, and finally as a yard conductor.
