Served in the Union Army in the Civil War as 1st Lieutenant in Co. K, 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. Enlisted Sept. 2, 1864. Discharged June 13, 1865.

His wife was Elizabeth Riley of West Virginia. Daughter of William Riley and Catherine Athey of Kingwood, Preston County, West Virginia.

Crawford place three miles' northeast of Brandonville. His son, James Gillis Crawford, was a county surveyor and second son, Hamilton Phenford Crawford, was a captain of militia. The Dean and Crawford families were incredibly involved with the schoolhouse supported by Methodist Episcopal Church in Brandonville, Preston County, West Virginia. The Dean and Crawford children were recorded together in church records as probationers in the Methodist Episcopal schoolhouse at the Crawford's place in the early 1850s.

James G. Crawford was recorded as class leader at the Grove School House not far from the Crawford place. The homes of the Deans and Crawford were less than 10 miles apart although they lived in different states.
