James T. Adams was the son of John Henry Adams and Mary Melissa Smith. He was born February 9, 1867, presumably in either Heard or Troup County, Georgia, which is where his parents were living in the 1860 and 1870 Census, respectively.

James married Martha Eldorada Butler; and to this union was born nine known children - Clark James Henry, Lucious Terrell, John Elbert, unnamed infant (1894), Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Malone), Auzy Anna G., Mary Lee, Samuel Benjamin, and Santford Franklin "Ted".

James was a farmer and also worked for one of the cotton mills in Huntsville, where he lived during the 1910's, and at the time of his death.

James Thomas Adams died March 20, 1920, in Huntsville, Alabama. Per his death certificate, he died from pneumonia, brought on by influenza.
