He was born the son of the late John Edward and Lola Clemmons Batson.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha B. Batson; son-in-law, Tommy Kirk; one brother and four sisters.
Mr. Batson was raised in Sloop Point where he helped his father farm until he began working at the Sear’s Landing Pontoon Bridge in Surf City.
During World War II, Mr. Batson proudly served his country in the US Army Infantry, first in the US, then in Europe and finally in the Philippines.
Upon leaving the Army, Mr. Batson returned home and began farming, a career that lasted the rest of his life. During his long farming career, Mr. Batson was awarded multiple awards for peanut production. He was one of the few remaining farmers working the fields of Pender County.
Soon after returning home from military service, Mr. Batson married Martha Batson, another Hampstead native. They were happily married for forty-six years.
Mr. Batson was a charter member of Sloop Point Rescue Squad, which is now Pender EMS, and Sloop Point Volunteer Fire Department where he was a member for twenty-five years, fifteen of those years he served as chief.
Mr. Batson was a member of Blake’s Chapel Advent Christian Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and served as a deacon for forty years.
He is survived by his daughter, Jane B. Kirk of Hampstead; three sons, Billy Batson and wife Constance, Robert Batson and Donnie Batson, all of Sloop Point; six grandchildren, Audrea George and husband Brad, Eric Batson and fiancée, Kristin Jenson, Kristia Grubb and husband Jimmy, Anthony Kirk and wife Kathy, Jennifer Graham and husband Tony and Billy Batson; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Mason and Mallory George, Hunter and Anthony Graham, Cody Kirk and Eric Haley. a special friend, Mary Edens; and a multitude of friends that will surely miss him.
