Walter Frank Dickerson, a welder and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Kaufman, Kaufman, Texas, the youngest child of Walter Marshall Dickerson (1886-1958), a farmer born in Elmo, Kaufman, Texas, and Lena Mae Nichols (1889-1971), who was born in Limestone County, but who moved to Kaufman County as a child. Walter had an older brother, who died at age 2, according to family records, and three sisters.

Walter married Hester Jewel Barnes (1920-2009) of Ables Springs, Kaufman, Texas, on January 6, 1935. They were the parents of six children.
