California pioneer. William L. Clark was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and worked as a fisherman. The news of the discovery brought 18 year old William west to California (via Cape Horn); he arrived in San Francisco on November 3, 1849. He was one of what is estimated to be 100,000 souls who came to California during the Gold Rush years. He was a member of the Sacramento Pioneer Association and is buried at historic Sacramento City Cemetery. Plot 60, Pioneer Grove
Spelled both Clarke and Clark. Clarke is more common and is the spelling used by his parents and children.
