Charlotte Lucille Bennett Johnson, 80, died Sunday, May 1st, 2005. Born in Hinton, W.Va., she had been a resident of Hampton since 1944. Charlotte had been a member of Hampton Christian Church for over 60 years where she had served as church secretary, Sunday School teacher, deaconess, and as a member of the Women's Circle. Charlotte loved music and was an active member of the church choir for 50 years. Charlotte had worked many years in the real-estate and insurance businesses for Abbitt Realty, Great Atlantic Realty, Lackey Saunders Insurance Agency, Ballou and Palmer Insurance, and as an independent insurance agent. She then worked for Smith Floragift as bookkeeper for many years until retiring and becoming a foster grandparent at Tyler Elementary School. She is survived by her children, Karen Johnson Blankenship of San Antonio, TX, Richard M. 'Rick' Johnson of Hampton, Virginia, Patricia Terry Gipe of Richmond, Virginia, and Sandra Terry Campbell of Chesterfield, Virginia; sisters, Anna B. Ditty of Elizabethville, Pennsylvania, and Bertie B. Maynor of Alexandria, Virginia; brother, Richard Edmund Bennett of Hampton, Virginia; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 5th, at Hampton Christian Church by the Rev. Darren Anderson with interment following in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Charlotte was a fiercely independent lady with a heart of pure gold. She put absolutely no conditions on the love she gave so freely to those who were blessed to be in her life. She will be missed beyond words.

Update: July 24, 2007

Charlotte's daughter, Karen, found a 5"X7" card, along with some of Karen's childhood school work. On it, was this beautiful poem that Charlotte had composed in the 1950's when Karen was a little girl.

WHAT IS A GIRL?

By Charlotte B. Johnson

A girl is a charming and wonderful being
In T-shirt or dress trimmed with lace
A lover of dolls and of little stray kittens..
A creature of beauty and grace
A girl is a fountain of bubbling laughter,
With pigtails or gay bouncing curls
She loves her crayons, and pennies and ribbons
And loves to share secrets with girls
She likes to play house with other small "Mothers"
Or run down the street jumping rope
Or climb on your lap for that extra story
Her heart full of undaunted hope
She's a lover of tea parties, ice cream and candy,
Of paper dolls, mud pies and pets
Of Sandpiles and roller skates, make up and dancing
And every new doll that she gets
A girl is a mixture of imp and angel,
Of wonder and sudden surprise,
With a woman's enchantment and magic and vision
With stardust and faith in her eyes.
