Marienville and vicinity were shocked and deeply grieved when they received the news on the evening of the death of one of her finest citizens, Mr. James MacKinter Hilyer passed away at his home in Marienville on February 23, 1938. Cause of death was due to a stroke. He had been ill for the past six months and had been living, up until a month ago with his daughter Inez (Hilyer) Norcross of Sheffield. James Mackinter Hilyer was born in Livingston County, New York on April 28, 1870 to Wilson W. Hilyer and his wife (name unknown). He lived a greater part of his life in and around Marienville. He was married in 1891 to Miss Harriet June Groce, a native of Scotch Hill. To this union were seven children. He was preceded in death by two sons, Eugene Howard Hilyer, who died when an infant in 1894, and James Daniel Hilyer who passed away five years earlier in 1932. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife Harriet June (Groce) Hilyer (d. 1941), three daughters, Florence Iola(Hilyer-Chittum) Williams (d. 1945)of Carlyle; Sarah Ethel (Hilyer-Ripley) Synder (d. 1971) of Rexford and Inez Mae (Hilyer-Norcross) Ditton (d. 1968) of Sheffield; two sons, Clyde Sylvester (d. 1957) and Leonde Wayne Hilyer (d. 1966), both were living in Marienville. He also left behind 25 grandchildren. Funeral services in his memory were held in the Methodist Church on February 26th at 2:00PM, with Rev. Paul Leyda officiating. Interment was made in the Marienville Cemetery.
