Eugene F. 'Gene' Clement
Eugene F. 'Gene' Clement entered into rest Dec. 21, 2004 at Kern Valley Hospital in Lake Isabella. Born in Portland, Ore. on Nov. 9, 1914 to Vanderbilt and Sara Clement, he was 90 years of age.
He joined the U.S. Navy on May 14, 1940. He served 12 years of active duty and 18 years in the Reserves.
Gene married the love of his life, Verna, on April 23, 1949 in Riverside, Calif. He helped build their first house in Norwalk, Calif. and later moved to Lakewood, Calif. From Lakewood, they bought a fixer-upper in Riverkern in 1976. He remodeled it to a cozy, loving home. He loved to fish, but he loved woodworking, his favorite hobby, most of all. If anything needed to be built, Gene could do it without a doubt.
Verna and Gene bought a motor home and joined a camping club called the Happy Hobos. They traveled for weeks at a time. Gene's motor home was the 'refreshment' before dinner drink campsite. He was the best bartender. Many vacation cruises were taken. Mexico, Alaska, Mississippi River and the Snake River were just a few of the favorites.
When arthritis started to cripple his feet, it was very difficult to get around but his strong determination and great love for Verna kept him going. Gene was a very admirable man. He was quiet in his own ways, but when he spoke, you definitely heard him. He was loved by many and will be missed by all that knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Verna, at the home; a son, Brian Clement, of Norwalk, Calif.; and Joan Clement, a daughter-in-law; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held in the Rose Chapel of Lake Isabella Valley Mortuary on Dec. 24, 2004. Interment was at Kern River Valley Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Lake Isabella Valley Mortuary.
