Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as a recruit Private in Company B, 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 17, 1864 (New Jersey Adjutant General records lists his last name as "Bercan"). Transferred to Company G, he served through to the end of the war, and was honorably discharged at the United States Army General Hospital at Frederick, Maryland on June 9, 1865.
