Elizabeth was a native of Montgomery county, Ohio, and was the daughter of Joseph White and his wife, whose family name was Miller. Joseph White was born in Kentucky and was of Scotch-Irish descent.

Elizabeth met and married Robert Stewart on March 2, 1843 in Ohio. To them were born ten children: Joseph, Samuel, Robert, James, William, Mary May, and Paul.
