Mert spent his early years in Tacoma but moved to Seattle in 1923.
Graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Civil Engineering.
He served four years overseas in the European Theater of Operations with an Army Engineers Construction Regiment and retired as a Major in the Army Reserves.
During his earlier years he worked as an Engineer on both Coulee Dam and the Hanford project. As a professional Civil Engineer, he worked for the Tacoma Public Utilities, Water Div. and after retiring he was an associate of the Industrial Consulting Services Inc.
