nrOn December 10, 1840, James married Elizabeth (O'Neill) James, widow of Isaac James. She was then a resident of nearby Westtown Township in Chester County. James and Elizabeth had three children; Wilmer in about 1843, Francis in about 1848, and Deborah in 1850/51.

In 1850, James and Elizabeth and their children were living in Pocopson Township, in Chester County. Sarah O'Neill, Elizabeth's widowed mother was then living in the same household.

In 1860, the couple were living in West Bradford Township, Chester County, with their three youngest children.

In 1870, James and Elizabeth were living in the 66th District, 20th Ward in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania with Rachael James, Elizabeth's daughter by her first husband Isaac James.

"In Memory of My Husband James A. Clemson
Born September 15, 1805 - Died March 18, 1873
