Country Musician. Born Sara Dougherty in Cooper Creek, Virginia, she was an original member of Country music's most popular family, the Carter Family Singers. Known for her distinctive singing voice, she married A.P. Carter in 1915 and was the lead singer on most of the recordings of the Carter Family act in the 1920s and 1930s. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame with the Carter Family in 1970, appeared on a United States postage stamp with Carter Family in 1993, and was inducted into the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2001.
