He was born about 1765 in what was then Augusta County, Virginia (now ?), the third child of Godfrey and Gertrude (Courtrought) Bumgardner. He married Margaret Ann Unknown about 1800 in Harrison County, Virginia (now WV). According to the 1810 census for Harrison Co., VA, they had two sons and one daughter, all under ten, and the 1820 census for Wood Co., VA, they had five sons and three daughters. The name of only one child is known, that of Alfred. Frederick along with brothers, Jacob and Andrew. were early pioneers in the part of Wood Co., that later became Wirt Co., VA in 1848 (1863 WV). It appears Frederick died prior to 1830 as Ann Bumgarner is head of the household with the eight children in Wood Co., VA. Frederick is said to have been shot while hunting in Wood Co., VA. The exact cause or date of death is not certain.
