Susan died of consumption. Her father-in-law, Rev. Dr. Nathan Bangs wrote on March 25, 1852: "Yesterday I attended the funeral of Susan O. Bangs, wife of my son, Nathan. What a loss has he sustained in the death of such a wife! She was one of the best of mothers in the training of her children as well as the best of wives. She professed religion and joined the Church about three years since and enjoyed peace with God, yet she often trembled in view of death. She lingered sometime with consumption..."
