She is the daughter of Allen Dickson who died in 1845. Her mother was Susannah Talent.

Married Elijah Aspinwall on October 17, 1820. She was 19 at the time and he was 30, on the marriage certificate.

Husband, Elijah Aspinwall was born in Massachusetts, April 29th 1790, son of John Aspinwall (b. May 3, 1764), a Revolutionary Soldier. He served in the United States Navy in the War of 1812, on a privateer. In the capturing of a British merchantman he received $10,000 in gold as his part of the loot, according to family tradition. His ship put in at the port of Savannah. While there he buried his money. Later he was captured. He was paroled at the end of the war, at Charleston, SC. He came back to Savannah and retrieved his money. He finally went to Bulloch County. When Allen Dickson went into Savannah for supplies, he met Elijah Aspinwall (who had recoverd the bounty in Savannah from his 1812 service), and Allen offered Elijah a job as a farm hand on the Dickson farm. Elijah eventually proposed to Barbary, to the objection of Allen Dickson. That is until Allen Dickson realized how much of a bounty Elijah Aspinwall was in possession of from his time in the war of 1812.

Barbary and Elijah had a number of children, some who did not survive. Possibly at least 4 children did not survive infancy and were unnamed. Later, they moved to Pierce county, Georgia from Bulloch, following the Dickson family.

Known children are:

James Aspinwall (b. 1822-1850). Killed when lightening struck his home.

Allen Aspinwall (b. Sept. 22, 1823 to June 3, 1877, Memorial # 53788602)

Elijah "John" Aspinwall (frequently referred to as John (b. Feb 25, 1825 to June 10, 1896, Memorial # 14141481). Served in Civil War). Married Julia Sweat.

Susan or Susannah Aspinwall, memorial (b. March 10, 1932), married to Martin Sweat; one daugter Barbary Sweat. Memorial #14959392.

Andrew Jackson Aspinwall (b. 1832, married Catherine Kimbrell. (Served in Civil War). Memorial #31506193.

Eliza Aspinwall (b. May 2, 1834 (memorial # 65904404, married John Donaldson; died in Patterson, GA (March 2, 1825 to May 8, 1912, Memorial # 65904349).

Matthew Aspinwall born Sep 15, 1836, Married Martha Strickland. Served in Civil War). Memorial #14141559.

Descendants say that Elijah Aspinwall moved to the 9th district of what was then Ware, now Pierce Co., GA about 1825-30, however, he is shown in the Bulloch County Census of 1830, and does not appear in Ware County in either the 1840 or 1850 censuses but is in Pierce County in the 1860 Census. Apparently he settled there between 1850 and 1860. He died there about 1865. His home was about 8 miles from where Blackshear is now. The exact dates of death of Barbary and Elijah Aspinwall are unknown but it is known that they were buried in unmarked graves in Shiloh Church near Blackshear, Georgia. Year of death has been recorded as 1875 and 1855. However, in the census of 1860 Elijah is alone and there is no further record of Barbary, hence she must have died in 1855.

Note: Barbary Dickson Aspinwall is frequently recorded as Barbara Dickson and Barbara Dixon. Barbary is an old English name, related to or the original name which evolved into "Barbara." Her date of birth is frequently misrecorded at 1890, when it was 1801 (as evidence by the marriage certificate of 1820 stating she was 19 years old at the time of marriage, not 30). Elijah was 30 and born in 1890.
