Obituary for Eva Mae Abernethy
Eva Mae Abernethy passed away peacefully on April 29, 2013, and went to be with her Lord at the age of ninety four. She was born on April 22, 1919 in Page County, Virginia to the late George and Willie Buraker.
Eva married Paul Abernethy on June 4, 1934, and they were happily married for 45 years. As a career Marine’s wife she enjoyed living on a number of Marine bases, and upon the death of her husband in 1979, she moved to Culpeper. In 2006 she moved to assisted living in Bridgewater retirement Community in Bridgewater, Virginia. She was an active member of Culpeper Assembly of God Church. She raised a family of five children and was known as a “Psalm 31 Mother”. Her grandchildren called her “Nanny”. When any family member needed prayer, they always called on “Nanny”
Eva is survived by two sisters, Virginia Anderson of Culpeper, Virginia and Iva Dean Efird of Brightwood, Virginia, her two sons and their spouses, Don and Martha Abernethy of Lawrenceville, Georgia; Bobby and Ellen Abernethy of Verona, Virginia; and daughter and Spouse, Betty and Manfred Brown of Wilmington, North Carolina. Her grandchildren are Connie Abernethy Temple, Dr. Don Abernethy, Jr. M.D., Monica Abernethy Whitworth, Mary Margaret “Cricket” Abernethy Lane, Paula Mae Abernethy Snellings, Stephanie “Stuffy” Abernethy Wood, Chad Abernethy, Dr. Holly Abernethy, M.D., Heather Abernethy, Dr. Patrick Abernethy, D.V.M., and Nicolas “Nic” Segovia. Great grandchildren are Paul Temple, Blake Temple, Gracie Temple, David Abernethy, Michael Abernethy, Ramsie Whitworth, Cal Whitworth, Adam Lane, Kevin Lane, Joshua Snellings, David Snellings, Zac Wood, Austin Wood, Sydney Wood, Ashby Pandya, Meade Pandya, and a very special niece Zora Bailey.
In addition to her parents Eva was preceded in death by two of her sons, Winfree Abernethy and Charles “Pete” Abernethy.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday, May 6, 2013 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Virginia with the Rev. Randy Albritton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Culpeper National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the, Culpeper Assembly of God Community Church, 120 Chestnut Dr., Culpeper Virginia 22701.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the ICU staff at the University of Virginia Medical Center for their support in her final days and also to the Bridgewater Retirement Home for their excellent care for the past eight years..
