Maryland Volunteers, war of 1861-65 shows 2nd ES Co G, vol 367, page 644
Suggested edit: His whereabouts in 1860 are as yet unknown as he is not found in that census with any certainty.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Baltimore, Maryland, August 28, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 30 as a private with Co. G, 2nd Maryland Eastern Shore Infantry. On July 18, 1864, the army charged him $3.14 for lost knapsack and straps, haversack, and canteen and in January 1865, another $4.60 for another haversack and canteen as well as his half of a shelter tent. On January 15, 1865, he transferred to Co. K, 11th Maryland Infantry, to complete his term of service, and honorably discharged with his company June 15, 1865.
He was living in Lancaster County when he married Margaret Anna Goss, née Snyder, widow of Adam Goss (18th U.S. Infantry) and six years her junior. (Based on the birth dates of Charles and Margaret's children, it appears she and Adam may have divorced prior to his death.) Charles fathered Martin S. (b. 10/31/74), Edward A. (b. @1877, d. 1892), Charlotte May (b. 08/21/80 - married Irvin Marlett Durnbaugh), and Roy (b. @1883, d. 1884). A post-war resident of Lancaster, he died in Willow Street where he had moved about a year prior to his death.
[NOT for publication: Please note that Baldwin did not serve with the 1st Maryland Eastern Shore Infantry. His compiled military service records are all with the 2nd.]
