Hugh, a son of George McMahan and his second wife Nancy E. Compton, was born in Indiana but raised in Nebraska. One of his father's sisters, Rachel (McMahan) Black (wife of Archibald Black) lived in Fairgrove, Tuscola County, Michigan. When Hugh visited his aunt, she introduced him to Carrie Towns, daughter of Chauncey Towns and Mary Jane Wallace.

Hugh and Carrie married on February 21st, 1900. In October 1901 Hugh's father George died and was buried in Nebraska, where their three children, Clifford Lynn (1900-1981), Alice Gertrude (1902-1974), and Bernard Chancy (1903-1980) were born.

Hugh's siblings Isabella and Alfred had already moved west to Washington, and his sister Etoil had died in childhood. After a three-year drought, Hugh brought Carrie and their three children back to Reese, Michigan where her parents lived. Three more children were born to them in Michigan; Dorothy Belle (1905-1978), Rex Owen (1908-1990), and Thomas Carl (1910-1987).

Hugh died of meningitis at the age of 54 years, 1 months, and 17 days.
