Annie and James moved to Merced when James took a job working as a shotgun messenger for Wells Fargo. Annie's second child, Anna Gladys, was born in Merced.

James died in 1897. Three years later, Anna married San Joaquin County Deputy Sheriff George H. Black. They lived in Stockton until 1913, when George took a job working as a prison guard in San Quentin.

Family lore has it that Annie worked as a prison matron at women's facilities at San Quentin and Tehachapi. Annie spent her later years back in San Francisco's Mission District. Her funeral Mass was celebrated at Mission Dolores.
