A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County November 8, 1862, and mustered into federal service at York November 10 as a private with Co. I, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). His service records claim that he "transferred to an old regiment," but that "old regiment" has yet to be found.
Catharine died in 1873, and he married Magdalena Wherley in 1875, fathering Catherine (b. @1875), George N. (b. 12/??/77). He died in the state insane asylum in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, from "atheromatous degeneration of cerebral arteries with secondary atrophy of brain cells."
Per the 1900 census, he was born in February 1842, his death certificate reflects only "71+," at conscription he claimed to be twenty-one years of age, and the 1860 census gives 1841 as his birth year. Ergo, he was likely born in 1841 or 1842.
