Nathaniel was the son of Dr. John Broome and his wife, Ann Wilson. He was a prominent attorney in Calvert County, Maryland. He served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. After his capture, he was arrested and held in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C., where he died.

Nathaniel married Anne Harriet Brooke.
