CREEKSVILLE — James Duncan "Whitey" Bridgers, 79, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
A native of Northampton County, he was a retired farmer and Postal Carrier with the United States Postal Service for the Conway area and as a lifelong member of Creeksville Baptist Church he had served as Deacon, Church Secretary, R.A.'s Leader, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Church Choir. He was a member of the Roanoke Chowan Wildlife Club and was seen as a "Gentle Giant" who loved to hunt rabbits and enjoyed sports.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marion Burgess Bridgers; daughter, Jonie B. Smith; and parents, Enoch and Mable Barnes Bridgers.
He is survived by his wife, Lou Cooke Bridgers, of Millennium; four children, James "Jimmy" Bridgers Jr. and wife, Paula Bell, and James Dale Bridgers, of Conway, Benita B. Lassiter and husband, Julian, of Harbinger, and Paula B. Massey and husband, Nelson, of Wake Forest; two
stepchildren, Lori C. Powell and husband, David, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and William Glen Cooke and wife, Kim, of Gates; six grandchildren, Dale Bridgers, Amy B. Futrell, Jesse Paul Bridgers, Casey L. Benton, Kelley L. Austin and Kendall Massey; six stepgrandchildren, Ben, Jake, Nathan and Matthew Powell and Mark, Nick and Jason Baines; four great-grandchildren, Morgan Futrell, Sophie and Silas Austin and Presely Benton; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Brianna, Kaylee, Kayleigh and Payton Baines; one sister, Myrtie Lanier, of Conway; and niece and nephew, Janna L. Lindberg and Marson Lanier.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Tuesday, May 7, at Bridgers Funeral Home Inc. in Conway, which is handling the arrangements.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, at Creeksville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Andy Sloan and the Rev. Taylor Latham presiding. Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery. At the family's request, anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, please do so to the Creeksville Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 114 Jenkins Mill Road, Conway NC 27820 or to Millennium Day Care Center.
