George was the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Jarrett) White.
He was living in Philadelphia when the war with Mexico broke out. George enlisted in Capt. Charles Naylor's company (2nd Pennsylvania Regiment) and served under General George Scott in battles from Vera Cruz to Mexico City. He returned to Chambersburg and married Charlotte Ann Nitterhouse in 1851. They lived in Dayton Ohio, then returned to Chambersburg at the beginning of the Civil War.

George engaged in the oil business as a dealer with territory extending from Harrisburg, Pa. Business was crushed the Standard Oil Company.
