Helen June Carlsen
01/19/21 to 03/25/13

Helen June Carlsen (Martell) of Sun City, CA, has gone home to be with the Lord. Helen was born on Jan. 19, 1921, in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. She passed away on March 25, 2013, from natural causes at the age of 92. Before she passed, Helen told her family that several family members who predeceased her were waiting to take her home including her husband of 45 years, Walter Carlsen.

Helen will be fondly remembered by all who knew her for her independence, intelligence, common sense, kindness, and family values. Few people knew, including her own daughters until they found an old newspaper clipping a few years ago, that Helen saved two small boys from a burning barn when she was about 13 years old. Perhaps this is why God smiled so kindly upon her. She will always be a hero in our eyes!

As the oldest daughter of a depression-era family with 11 children, Helen helped to raise her siblings after their mother died at an early age. Afterward she decided marriage could wait and relocated to California to escape the cold winters. During WWII, she worked at the ConAir factory in San Diego. After the war, Helen met and later married Walter Carlsen, a native of Norway, who was a WWII U.S. veteran and a foreman at Robertshaw Grayson Controls in Long Beach, CA. They were wed on Nov. 5, 1949. They had four daughters: Carol, Diane, Kathyrn and Karin. The girls grew up in the family home on Cassina Avenue in South Gate, CA. Early in their marriage, Helen worked for the So. Calif. Gas Co. in Los Angeles. When she returned to the work force, Helen was employed by the Los Angeles County Office of Education in Downey, CA, until she retired. Helen worked for Dr. Jennifer Danford, Dr. Brenda Sorenson and Dr. Marilyn Armstrong in the Special Education Division. She made many good friends there.

After Walter passed away, Helen resided with Kathy and her son-in-law John in Sun City, CA, who took good care of her. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Helen's caregivers who helped to provide compassionate in-home care to Helen during her last couple of years – thank you to Sarah, Barbara Jean, Felicia, Rasha and Gail. You are truly God's angels.

One of 12 children born to Edward and Anna Martell, Helen was the oldest girl. She joins in heaven her siblings: Albert, Charles, Genevieve, Gene, Kenneth, Phyllis and a stillborn infant boy. She is survived by siblings: Alvin "Roy" Martell of Alexandria, MN; Rita Vreim of Wilmot, SD; Rosalie Creasman of Downey, CA; and Lyle Martell of Kekaha, HI. Helen also is survived by her daughters: Carol Prado (Daniel) of Oceanside, CA; Diane Huntoon of Lakewood, CA; Kathyrn Troutman (John) of Sun City, CA; and Karin Ross (Gary) of La Mesa, CA. Helen was a loving and devoted grandmother to six grandchildren: Kevin, Gregory, Christopher, Lisabeth, Nicole, and Clayton; one step-grandson Kristopher; and one great granddaughter Leah.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on March 28 at Miller-Jones Mortuary, 26770 Murrieta Rd., Sun City, CA, 92586, (miller-jones.com). A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Helen's memory to the American Diabetes Association.
