Sgt. Nicholas H. "Nick" Montague, 26, of Joint Base Lewis/McCord, Washington, died on May 5, 2013, from injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident.
Nick was born on May 5, 1987, in Marshall to Richard M. Montague and Tracy (Byrens) Richardson. He graduated from Olivet High School in 2005.
Nick entered in to the U.S. Army National Guard in 2005, and later in 2006 he would enlist in the Active U.S. Army. Nick was stationed at Hunter Airfield in Savannah, Georgia before being stationed at the Joint Base Lewis/McCord in Washington. Nick served with the Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. While serving in the Army, Nick spent two years over seas serving three tours in Afghanistan, and one tour in Iraq. Nick was awarded an Expert Qualification Medal in weapons, Army Good Conduct Medal three times, Army Achievement Medal twice, National Defense Medal, Over Seas Medal, Army Aviation Medal, Iraqi Campaign and Afghanistan Campaign Medals.
Nick had a huge passion for cars and motorcycles. He enjoyed working on, driving and racing his Subaru STI and was recently trained to race his car. Nick enjoyed bowling, outdoors activities and spending time with his girlfriend Marissa and his many friends and family.
He is survived by his mother, Tracy Richardson of Olivet; father and step-mother, Richard and Melanie Montague of Willard, Missouri; brothers, Andrew Montague of Grand Rapids, Cameron Montague of Charlotte, Vaughan Montague of Willard, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Danielle Montague of Grand Rapids, Andrea Burns of Springfield, Missouri, Alexis Bartlett of Lansing; niece, Genevieve Elizabeth Montague. He is also survived by paternal grandparents, Richard and Margie Montague of Olivet; maternal grandparents, Danford and Emily Byrens of Pleasantville, Tennessee; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a good friend, Jay Cords in 2010.
Visitation will take place at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 2-8pm with family present to greet friends from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 11:30 am on Friday, May 17, 2013, with Nick's Uncle, Pastor Steve Byrens officiating. Interment with full military honors will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Family requests memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
