He served in the Civil War in Company K 33rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

In December 1865, he moved to Louisiana. He was elected to the Louisiana state legislature, eventually becoming speaker of the house. Orlando was appointed U.S.Surveyor by the Ulysses S. Grant administration, and he worked under Captain James Eads improving the Mississippi delta jetties. Orlando began, however, as superintendent of schools in Oauchita Parish. From 1872 to 1876 he was superintendent of Schools of the 5th District, Louisiana.

He moved his family to Florida and built a large hotel on the northeast shore of Lake Charm in 1887 in a resort city called Lake Charm near Oviedo. It was called The "Brewster House" and the "Zufrieden". Guests were carried by carriages which ran from the train station on the west side of the lake. The hotel burned down in 1928.
