Originally a brewmaster at Franklin Street Brewery, in 1887 he began operating in partnership with Magdalena Hartmetz the Butchertown Brewery. In 1892 he bought out his partner's interest, and in 1906 incorporated the Oertel Brewing Company which survived a devastating fire in 1908, and appeased authorities during Prohibition by producing dealcoholized beer, root beer, ginger ale, and other beverages. After his death his son John F. Oertel, Jr. succeeded as president, and the company expanded and thrived after Repeal. In 1935 the company introduced a popular pale lager called Oertel's '92, along with Little Brown Jug Ale.
