Larry was born in Caldwell County to the late Vernon McDowell Hines and Frances Faries Hines.

In his youth, Larry joined the Boy Scouts of America and developed a love of the outdoors. He continued this interest and spent many happy days fishing and boating on Lake James. He appreciated nature and this was reflected in his photographs and paintings.

Larry grew up with a group of friends known as the "Colliers Boys". A favorite story told by his younger brother recalls the time that Larry decided to raise a pig for a project in his agricultural class. He kept meticulous records of feeding and weight gain, and all was well until Larry's father announced that the agricultural teacher was coming to their house to help him prune grape vines. On that day, Larry disappeared into the woods and wasn't seen until nightfall, fearing that his teacher would ask to see the pig. Why? Well, the "project" was a creation of Larry's imagination. There was no pig!

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He loved artistic painting and had become interested in genealogy and recording his family history. He had also restored an old truck. Larry loved eating out with his friends and family and was well-known at local restaurants.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 27 years, Lynn; a son and his wife; a daughter; two granddaughters; a brother and his wife; and a niece and nephew. Also left are his aunt and many friends and extended family.

He will also be missed by his beloved dogs, Trevor and Bogey.

Funeral Services for Larry were held Tuesday, May, 14, 2013 at 4 o'clock pm in Pendry's Chapel with the Reverend David Smith officiating. Eulogies and tributes were given by his family and friends. Burial with Masonic rites was held at Bellview Cemetery in Lenoir.

Memorials may be made to the Masonic Lodge at 721 Main St. E Valdese, NC 28690; to be used toward the many charities that the Masonic Lodge contributes to yearly, including St. Jude's Children's Hospital and many other charities.

Pendry's Funeral Home was honored to be serving the family of Larry Hines.
