He was born in New York City, New York, and enlisted in the United States Navy, as a Midshipman, at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1859. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1859 to 1863. On October 25, 1863 he was promoted to Ensign in the United States Navy. His first posting was the steamfrigate U.S.S. Niagara in 1863. He was part of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron from 1863 to 1865. He took part in the Battle of Mobile Bay, on August 5, 1864. In 1865 he was transferred to the Pacific Squadron from 1865 to 1866. On May 12, 1868 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander and placed in command of the U.S.S. Shenandoah of the Asiatic Squadron. He was promoted to Commander in the United States Navy, in 1881. He commanded the U.S.S. Ashuelot in the Asiatic Squadron from 1881 to 1890. He reitred from active duty in 1890.
