OLD TOWN - Arnold Ray Caron passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends May 10, 2013, after ten days in a Bangor hospital. Arnold was born Nov. 10, 1925, in St. John, the son of Melissa and Fred Caron, but he was raised by his maternal grandparents August and Anice Johnson after his mother died during childbirth.
Growing up in Aroostook County, he was supported by a large extended family. When he turned 18 he made the commitment to enlist in the U.S. Navy and proudly served in World War II. While on the USS Ticonderoga, he took part in the battle near Luzon in the Philippine campaign in 1944; South Japanese Island campaign where his ship was struck by two Kamikazes with a large loss of life and took part in the surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay, Sept. 9, 1945. Arnold also participated in Operation High Jump, Admiral Byrd's historical exploration of Antarctica.
April 1, 1950, Arnold married his beloved wife, Germaine Pelletier, of Old Town and had two sons. Arnold continued his service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1963. After retiring from the Navy, he was the assistant manager at Dow Air Force Base Commissary until its close and retired for his third and final time from Standard Electric. In Arnold's free time he enjoyed fishing, being "upta camp" with his close friends and family at Schoodic Lake and his coffee buddies with the "Romeo Club" at McDonalds.
Arnold Caron is survived by his wife of 63 years, Germaine (Pelletier) Caron, of Old Town; sons, Michael of Skowhegan and Scott and wife, Michelle, from North Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Stacy Bee and husband, Nick, Benjamin, Jennifer and Christopher; and great-grandchild, Catherine Bee. Other family includes brother, Alfred Caron; uncles and aunts which he considered brothers and sisters, Wilfred, David, Adina, Evelyn, Evangeline, Lawrence Jr., Edith, Guy, Hilda, Alfreida, Glen, Ray, Eldon, Maurice, George, August, Robert and Anice; special half sister, Edith; as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws, Thelma, Norman, Francis, Rita, Noah Jr., Beatrice, Anita, Verna, Rose, Lester and Barbara. Also close relative and lifelong friends, Vina and Robert Lounsbury; and numerous friends and relatives who have shared many laughs and memories with the family.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Forest Hill Cemetery, Old Town. (Bangor Daily News 5/13/2013)
